Synopsis for "Mortal Coils"

Archangel and Jean Grey joke and reminisce as he flies her to his house in the Colorado Rockies. They land on its deck, and he notes today is the anniversary of his girlfriend Candy Southern’s death. Just as he laments never telling Candy how much he loved her, she appears and greets him. That night at Xavier’s School, Beast oversees a sparring session in the Danger Room between Professor X and Quicksilver. As the two duel, they debate whether Xavier must become as ruthless as Magneto to defeat him. Back in Colorado, Archangel insists Candy is an impostor until Jean telepathically verifies her identity. In Manhattan, Storm meets Forge for dinner, he apologizes for the things he said when he left her, and they reconcile. In Colorado, Candy has Jean psionically link with her and Warren, and they relive her death at the hands of Cameron Hodge. Warren is horrified to learn Candy did not die until after he arrived too late to save her. Next, they see doctors talking and standing over after her resurrection. This memory triggers an explosion, and Hodge appears in a shape-shifting techno-organic form. He gloats that he has been reconstructed to lead a genocidal movement against mutants. Archangel guts Hodge with his wing, causing Candy to tear herself open. Brought back in a similar form to Hodge, she and he are linked so he can use her for spare parts. Candy turns the link against Hodge, overriding his systems and forcing him to explode. Mortally injured, Candy reaffirms her love for Warren and dies again. Jean says the fight is over, but Archangel notes Hodge said there are others.

  • Cameron Hodge murdered Candy Southern, and Archangel decapitated him in revenge in X-Factor #34. Hodge survived because of a deal he had made with the demon N'astirh to become immortal. Prior to this story, Hodge was last seen when Rictor brought down the Genoshan citadel on him in X-Factor #62.
  • Forge proposed marriage to Storm then dumped her and left the X-Men in Uncanny X-Men #289-290.
